The children of Chaullacocha, Peru while dressed in the rich textiles of their Incan tradition, suffer the extreme hardships of living in one of the highest, most remote mountain villages in the country. They lack nutritious food, clean water, sanitation facilities, medical care and educational opportunities. However, they do possess the means to improve their lives: the traditional hand-woven crafts made by the villagers are rich in meaning and material. The colorful and intricate patterns in their clothes are ancient in design and made with great care. Even the fastest weaver will spend up to two full weeks on a single panel of cloth. Unfortunately, the compensation they receive for their work is meager at best as the local market is overflowing with cheaply made alternatives.

As designers passionate about the value of creativity, this struck us on a deeply personal level. Without recognition for the unique quality of their textiles, the art of the Chaullacochan people is slowly being lost. We feel that our specialized communication skills can help share the story of these artisans with a broader audience. The most powerful way to communicate to the global marketplace is through the World Wide Web. By creating a communication package consisting of website, an online store and supporting infrastructure, we intend to educate people around the world about the value of traditional Peruvian textiles, and to enable the Chaullacochans to sell their work outside the limited economy of their local markets.
